Bootstraps – A one-word conversation with faculty
In the third episode of the S.A.F.E. Topics podcast, we have a one-word conversation with faculty on “Bootstraps.” We were joined by our MiraCosta College faculty members Alexis Tucker-Sade (Anthropology), Nery Chapeton Lamas (Computer Science), and Tony Burman (Letters).
What to listen for:
- Bootstraps as the myth of the American Dream.
- Are we interdependent on one another?
- What other factors or people are involved in my success?
- How one event can change everything.
- Having limited resources to reach our goals.
- What does cultural wealth and grit look like in the classroom?
- Do we, as faculty, perpetuate structures and power in our classes?
- Getting rid of structures vs. Illuminating them.
- Ideological domination.
- Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps in media.
- Are we helping our students too much?
- Being (un)comfortable with power.
- When does it “click?”
