11:34:26 From Jim Julius : Feel free to type in any questions/comments you may have as the workshop proceeds. 11:40:18 From Gregg Kelley : If a class is online, and it has a lab component, are there any specific requirements? Right now, I use Collaborate in Blackboarad to have synchronous sessions. 11:41:45 From Jim Julius : Gregg, there are specific requirements for any classes that include distance education. We’ll be discussing some of that as we move forward in this session - please bring this up again at the end of the session if this hasn’t become more clear to you (or at least where to go to learn more) 11:45:20 From Gregg Kelley : specific to a class with a lab component 11:51:03 From Don Dean : how is this different for hybrid courses 11:54:16 From Gail Meinhold : I like using a vibrant discussion board 11:54:38 From Nancy Thuleen : Skype (sometimes required sessions), discussion boards, feedback on assignments, announcements, video lectures 11:54:42 From Mike Deschamps : Discussion Boards, Live office hours, videos. 11:54:54 From Silvia Vazquez : Discussion board, communication via Skype and Zoom, plus videos 11:54:57 From Kavita Patel : Live sessions every week and having discussions on discussion board. 11:55:08 From Edwina : video analyses / reflection discussions 11:55:54 From Minerva Tapia : Discussion boards, office hours via Skype 11:55:57 From Nancy Thuleen : I wish it could be all asynchronous, but language learning needs some ‘on the spot’ interactions 11:56:15 From leigh cotnoir : Synchronous optional sessions 11:56:22 From Renee Fox-Moore : Having assignments where the students find, post and comment using appropriate terminology in DB. 11:56:47 From Don Dean : If we record and provide, even if only a few students can participate in the video conference, does this qualify for the standard? 11:57:16 From Renee Fox-Moore : How do instructors organize “live sessions”? 11:57:36 From Gregg Kelley : Zoom, Collaborate, etc. 11:58:33 From leigh cotnoir : for project-based stuff, Voicethread is great for class critiques because even though it’s asynchronous, you can capture real-time conversation. 11:59:36 From Renee Fox-Moore : Question is not really the technology but of the organizing of the schedules. 11:59:59 From Nancy Thuleen : I use a google spreadsheet sign-up sheet, Renee. 12:00:28 From Gregg Kelley : I have three different synchronous sessions students can choose from to participate 12:05:32 From Renee Fox-Moore : Awesome, thank you for your responses. 12:10:27 From Silvia Vazquez : how was called that program for proctoring? croctorial? 12:10:35 From Jim Julius : proctorio 12:10:40 From Silvia Vazquez : Thank you 12:14:37 From Gregg Kelley : like Hillary's emails? 12:18:19 From Kavita Patel : Thank you! 12:18:31 From Gregg Kelley : Some on-ground and online classes have a lecture and lab component. For an on-ground classes, the lab would come after the lecture for students to work on projects, assignments, etc., and work with the instructor to help them with tools, techniques, etc. I use either synchronous online sessions or optional face-to-face sessions periodically throughout the semester to accommodate the lab component. But, is there a specific requirement for online classes which have a lab component that an instructor must have some sort of synchronous session whether online or face-to-face? 12:18:40 From Nancy Thuleen : not accreditation related, but similar: during a job interview, a dean from another comm college told me abruptly that "online classes are not transferrable for UC credit," flat out. When pressed, he said they would be disapproved if the student's transfer was audited. Did he mean correspondence courses, or was he just completely wrong? He can't have been right? 12:19:15 From Gregg Kelley : thank you for the clarification 12:19:40 From Gregg Kelley : Many classes are transferrable to CSU and UC 12:21:08 From Nancy Thuleen : ok, thanks … I was pretty sure he couldn’t be right :) 12:21:09 From leigh cotnoir : re: your response to Gregg, is that entirely up to individual instructors? Or can that be a departmental decision (or included in course outline of record)? 12:21:11 From Shawn Firouzian : Thank you. 12:21:18 From Serena Mercado : Thank you 12:21:21 From Gregg Kelley : Many thanks! 12:21:22 From Rica French : Thank you all!! 12:21:22 From Silvia Vazquez : Thank you it was very informative 12:21:24 From Edwina : Thank you!!! 12:21:36 From Wolpov : Thanks 12:21:38 From Kavita Patel : Thanks once again! Very informative! 12:21:44 From Nirmala Kashyap : Thank you Jim, Chris. very informative. 12:21:53 From Mercedes Strong : Very informative, many thanks. 12:21:53 From Janelle West : Thanks! 12:21:55 From Nancy Thuleen : Thanks! 12:21:55 From Mike Deschamps : Thanks so much! 12:21:57 From Don Dean : Thank you! 12:21:57 From Roberto Falero : thank you
